PostSubject: Computer technics HELP!   Sun Nov 28, 2010 9:47 pm

Ok so i took off from a laptop an Hard Disk IDE with win xp installed in it,so i basically want to run it from an usb port (2.5 hd,with 2 cables to connect,so 2 usb connectors)...
Win vista recognize it as a normal hard drive during vista run...
I have tried to multiboot after bios check and it says there is no operating system installed...
I have made a partition on my internal hd (SATA) of 50 gb..Should i copy the ISO from the external hd to the internal hd and retry?...
i'm also trying to remake an installation cd from the xp installed but the folder i386 is missing..
its all night i've been trying to find a solution ARGH HELP!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa FUCK VISTA I CANT HANDLE IT ANYMORE.

just tried to remove 1 of the 2 cable, the hd is still visible and working during vista,When i try to boot it starts a boot (after bios set up) and then it goes blue screen too fast that i cant even read the problem..

What are you "multibooting" ? You said that youve removed int.IDE and you have the only one USB ext. drive now...?
Crashbandicoot wrote:

Wait, you said that you had internal IDE HDD, and now you say it is SATA?

Can suggest that you have bsod 0x7b error Smile

So, please explain your situation like "I have laptop with win.vista, its on my XX.GB SATA internal and I want to reainstall it (to change it) to another OS and not to lose some data" or kinda like that. Very Happy

Ok I understand now. So there are two ways:
1st - you will have bsod with 0x7b cause of different hardware drivers
2nd - before removing IDE HDD, delete HDD drivers from OS and set default OS HDD drivers. Then try to start OS with HDD on another hardware. (but its not 100% that it will work)
ps - I made 4 or 5 times that way - had to move HDD and to start OS without reinstall on a totally different hardware and 4 from 5 times that worked fine. (but I never tried to boot from usb that way you say Rolling Eyes )

pss - and about bsod
1st - you can set to log on your bsods in minidump and then check it at %windir%minidump
2st - there are bsod analyzers to check what file (process) is making you that boot error.

i really want to get rid of vista
Then why dont you do all much easier ?
- boot from any live cd
- delete all system vista files
- dont delete all data that you need
- isntall XP or any other OS.
- do all this at your native sata hdd.

The problem is,i'm not sure my ram/videocard/dualcore is supported by win xp...
same goes for the real usage of dx11 and stuff like that..
maybe i should just buy win7 and downgrade to xp..

Then do another partition, make full img of partition c: before reinstalling os and the try to install xp and to launch games. In case of unsupported drivers you can backup your old os from img. Take for ex. acronis true img from any live cd.

by the way, Im 99% sure that you will find any drivers for all you video/motherb. etc under winXP and it will work with all games you have. The only one difference that you wont have dx11, but games will work under dx10 too.

running an xp image from one machine to another often fails due to the HAL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_abstraction_layer). I've done it before by replacing the HAL files on the blue screen os with ones I know will work. You can use a guide like this http://www.myitforum.com/articles/47/view.asp?id=8997. If one PC is dual core and the other is not this is probably going to be one of the main problems.

From what I understand, you want to make sure XP will work on the hardware? If you need DX10 or above vista/windows 7 is your only option, XP stopped at DX9. If you know make/model of PC post it here with spec and I could do some googling to see if it would run XP. As drk said, it probably would.

Windows 7 would be your best option if the new PC was able to run it. Vista sucks ass

According to here http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=22698&start=15&tstart=0 there are XP drivers for that notebook. Best to download them before installing XP. I would normally download the network card drivers, install XP, install network card drivers, plug into the internet and then let windows update run until there are no more updates. Then put the drivers on for anything that is missing.

looks like the laptop will run Windows 7 also Smile

PostSubject: Re: Computer technics HELP!   Tue Nov 30, 2010 12:01 pm

I saw this topic, so decided to post a problem which don't allow to work with PC at all.

I think everybody know the black screen with a lot of text in boot up process (don't know how to name it differently Razz )
Firstly there is lines like; Main Processor, Memory Testing, Primary Master, Primary Slave etc.

After that come text: Floppy disk fail (40) (I think that this might be the problem)

Then come option: F1 to continue, DEL to enter SETUP

If I press DEL It opens the Award BIOS setup (blue background)
If I press F1 it leads to another black screen with a lot of text.
Diskette Drive A: 1.44M, 3.5 in
Diskette Drive 5: None
Pri Master disk: None
ect

USB Storage Device: USB CD - ROM Storage Device Class
PCI device listing........
Bus No. DEvice No. Func No. Vendor/Device Class IRQ
Thats all

I read something about: floppy setup in CMOS have to be 3.5, 1.44MB. for most types of PC. But Diskette Drive A: 1.44M, 3.5 in; is same, only there is added "in".

Or there might be anoher problems and what to do?

no Hard drive(PRImary Master Drive) was detected.
try opening your pc -unplug floppy drive and try to check all hard drive cables if they are connected correctly.

If you have NO floppy - run bios and set "floppy - no floppy", "hault on errors - you have "f1" now, - set - no errors" there.
And check up you boot device order. It should be hdd > cd-rom > lan.boot > usb boot ... etc. HDD should be 1st.

What did you think with NO floppy?
Run bios and set floppy - no floppy, I could do after pressing DEL, if I am right.

And set "no errors", I could do after pressing F1, but how I can type the operation to activate "no errors"? And if I set "no errors" for further boot ups it won't detect any kind of errors, if they will be. Is that wise?

And finally, where I could find out either the boot device order or change it.

Maybe firstly try to disconnetc the floppy cable and check other connections. Isn't that better.

1st - I still dont understand what is your problem.... you cant boot from your HDD or what ? Or do you want to remove "press f1" but still you can boot?

yes, "no errors at bios" is usually for no "pressing" f1 when you have no keyboard for example and you want that your system will start without checking "if your keyboard" is in when you are booting and etc...
Or for example - youve removed your floppy but in bios you forgot to change "floppy - 1.44" to "flopppy - disabled" and system during boot will warn you "floppy 1.44 not found.... keep bootimng? press f1"
etc etc...
Auross wrote:

At bios ofc Smile
Should I show you example screenshot ? Smile
